Although hypnosis is still seen by some as that famous cartoon technique that swings a watch to make people act unconsciously, it actually happens differently.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), with small considerations from the Brazilian Society of Hypnosis (SBH), hypnosis can be defined as an [intentionally induced] state of consciousness that involves focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness, characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion. In this state, the subject is led to experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behavior [goal-oriented].

Moreover, several studies show that hypnosis can help people resolve various issues, such as smoking addiction, anxiety crises, weight loss difficulties, and even depression.

But did you know that hypnosis can also promote benefits during pregnancy and childbirth?

Therefore, continue reading this content to learn about the incredible benefits of this technique.

Controlling labor pain

Labor pains can be considered one of the five worst that any human can experience. However, researchers conducted a study in 1940, showing that even labor pains can be subjective. Their conclusions were that the intensity of labor pain varied according to personality, mood, memories, and the duration of labor.

Depending on how these factors are positively influenced, the pain can be controlled. According to some studies from Unifesp, by using hypnosis during labor, it is possible to change the perceptions of a woman’s contractions so that they can be felt as a sensation of pressure or numbness.

A woman under the effect of these techniques will never have her consciousness absent from the moment but will be absent from the negative effects of fear, panic, and anxiety that only promote more difficulties in tolerating labor pain.

Preparing the mind for bodily changes during pregnancy

Even if labor pains are controlled, pregnancy usually involves a 9-month process, causing various hormonal and bodily changes in a woman, which can make her more emotionally sensitive. Because of this, some complications such as self-esteem issues, distrust of one’s own body, and even fear of what might happen are common during this period.

With hypnosis techniques, a woman can undergo a therapeutic process to make it easier to adapt to the changes that will occur. Moreover, she becomes more confident in her body and the signals it reveals.

Combating anxiety during pregnancy

By gaining this confidence, a woman finds it easier to combat anxiety crises that may arise during pregnancy. It is common for pregnant women to fear dying during childbirth, and if they are not properly accompanied or instructed, they may suffer a terrible pregnancy period, especially when complications occur during childbirth, potentially causing traumas like postpartum disorder (PPD).

With hypnosis techniques, a woman can learn to control her fears and anxiety crises. Thus, she can find the relaxation she needs and keep her attention focused on positive thoughts, imaginations, and sensations, rather than on “rational thoughts” or negative speculations. Although this technique can have instant effects, its relaxation and breathing exercises can become increasingly effective with repetition.

Therefore, using hypnosis during pregnancy and childbirth can bring many benefits, being an important complement to the field of obstetrics, along with clinical and technological advances.

Moreover, hypnosis can help inhibit the negative factors of the entire pregnancy process, and it can also be an opportunity for a woman to enjoy all the positive potential of this moment in her life.
